PREFACE

The Indonesian archipelago is by far the world’s largest – 13,677 islands strewn across 5,120 kilometers (3,200 miles) of tropical seas.  When superimposed on a map of North America, Indonesia stretches from Oregon all the way to Bermuda.  On a map of Europe, the archipelago extends from Ireland past the Caspian Sea.  With a total land area of 1.88 million sq. kilometers (735,000 sq. miles), Indonesia is the world’s sixth largest political entity.

Of course, four-fifths of the intervening area is occupied by ocean and many of the islands are tiny, no more than rocky outcroppings populated, perhaps, by a few seabirds.  But 3,000 Indonesian islands are large enough to be inhabited with Irian Jaya (New Guinea) and Kalimantan (Borneo) ranking as the second and third largest in the world behind Greenland.
Of the other major islands, Sumatra is slightly larger than Sweden or California.  Java is as large as England or New York State. The recently accessible wonderland of SULAWESI (formerly called Celebes) is roughly the size of Great Britain and POLA PELITA EXPRESS TOURS & TRAVEL wishes to introduce this Indonesian island to you.

To begin with, Sulawesi’s steep mountains, deep gorges, fast flowing rivers, blue highland lakes, lush rain forests, lontar palm savannas, and white sand beaches house a fascinating array of unusual flora and fauna, including many species found nowhere else in the world.

The island’s 12 million human inhabitants are equally diverse, speaking a total of 40 - 50 different languages!  The island has four provinces. In the south lies Makassar (Ujung Pandang), the capital of South Sulawesi Province, which is famous worldwide for its Toraja highlanders, Bugis sailors with their “Pinisi” schooners, and Mandar people. The southeastern capital is Kendari.  Central Sulawesi is known for spectacular Lake Poso and its capital is in Palu. In the northernmost region is MANADO, where world class diving in Bunaken Marine Park (89,000 ha) is found.

PT. POLA PELITA EXPRESS TOURS & TRAVEL (established in 1980) has the pleasure of presenting to you and your guests the wonders of Sulawesi, in particular North Sulawesi Province. We trust this information and the tour packages will be helpful in planning your vacation. We assure our utmost care and service will be given to you.

Yours sincerely,
